The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) marks its 100 years of legacy in shaping India’s civil services. Since its establishment in 1926, UPSC has been the cornerstone of India’s democratic governance, selecting leaders of integrity, competence, and vision who have served the nation in various capacities.

The centenary is an opportunity to reflect on the journey, evolution, and impact of UPSC as an institution that has stood for Trust, Impartiality, Fairness, Integrity, Merit and Excellence in Public Services.

About UPSC

Established in 1926, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s administrative machinery. For nearly a century, it has stood as a symbol of integrity, meritocracy, and excellence in public service recruitment and related matters. UPSC has remained steadfast in its mandate to select individuals based on merit through a fair and transparent process, contributing immensely to the development and governance of the nation.
As UPSC enters its centenary year (2025-26), the Commission envisions celebrating this remarkable journey with a series of meaningful and dignified events. These celebrations will honor its legacy, spotlight innovations, and inspire future generations.

Functions of the Commission

Under Article 320 of the Constitution of India, the Commission is, inter-alia, required to be consulted on all matters relating to recruitment to civil services and posts. The functions of the Commission under Article 320 of the Constitution are

  • Conduct examinations for appointment to the services of the Union.
  • Direct recruitment by selection through interviews.
  • Appointment of officers on promotion / deputation / absorption.
  • Framing and amendment of Recruitment Rules for various services and posts under the Government.
  • Disciplinary cases relating to different Civil Services.
  • Advising the Government on any matter referred to the Commission by the President of India.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the Constitutional Authority, will be marking 100 years of its existence with a year-long series of events and activities. The Centenary Year celebrations will begin on 1st October 2025 and continue until 1st October 2026.

Subsequent to the provisions of the Government of India Act, 1919, and the recommendations of the Lee Commission (1924), the Public Service Commission was established in India on 1st October 1926. Later named the Federal Public Service Commission (1937), it was renamed the Union Public Service Commission with the adoption of India’s Constitution on 26th January 1950. Since its inception, UPSC has been a symbol of transparency, fairness, and meritocracy, ensuring the selection of the most deserving candidates through a rigorous and impartial process for senior-level positions in Government services.

The Centenary Year celebrations give an opportunity to look back at the legacy with pride, to introspect for improvement, and to look forward to make the country proud by deploying the best human resources in the nation-building process. It is also an occasion to plan a roadmap for the next 100 years of glory for UPSC.

This portal is designed to collect the memoirs of officers, who have pursued their dream job through UPSC. A first-hand account of Members (serving or retired) of various services/ organisations under Government of India, who have appeared in the UPSC Personality Test (Interview stage).

By submitting their experience, participants grant UPSC non-exclusive rights to use, reproduce, and publish their submitted content.
Personal data collected (Name, Address, Mobile, Aadhaar) will be used solely for verification and record purposes, in compliance with applicable data protection guidelines.
Those whose entries get shortlisted and feature in the book/ publication, to be rewarded with UPSC Memorabilia/ Centenary year postage stamp. However, no remuneration or honorarium will be paid for the submissions.
UPSC will not be liable for any disputes arising out of such shared personal experiences.
